137 Gorten1 Irreg vs Kreoss3 EI
30.10.2021
Finally it is time again to face the Protectorate who will forever be my sworn mortal enemy. Mercs have a huge problem dealing with the the denial and pure stat numbers in Menoth and I have lost an insane number of games against them over the years. But that also means that I appreciate each win I can scrape through that much more. I figure I’d try the revised Gorten list and my opponent has a new variation of the old Kreoss3 cavalry list lined up.

Deployment
With rerolls and +1 I win the starting roll and choose to go first. There is a huge obstruction in one of the circular zones and a forest in the other, so my opponent has a pretty easy choice for sides.
Turn 1A
I set up a line of jacks behind the rock wall and the rest outside of 17” of the errants. I may be respecting the shooting a bit too much and could have put the two bunnies further up and just take the crossbow shots on the chin. Elias Gade has preyed Eiryss, so she is keeping back very carefully.
Turn 1B
Opponent keeps the cav and jacks outside of my charge ranges, but runs everything else up.
Turn 2A
Nemo and the bunnies shoot out a couple of cav models, but I take care not to trigger vengenace on Hand of Vengeance. As a precautionary measure I put up the covering fire and rock wall in front of the bunnies and objective in the central zone. This placement wasn’t very thought through and in hindsight I should have focused a bit more on protecting Nemo or at least placed the Rock wall such that the Errants wouldn’t be able to sneak past it.
Turn 2B
Kreoss puts up Ignite on the Errants and sneaks in between the gun bunnies and the Rock Wall template. I am lucky not to lose any jacks, but they are all quite crippled at this point. Nemo also takes a chunk of damage. Had my opponent focused all the Errants on Nemo it would probably have been quite dangerous for him. I definitely underestimated the damage output of the Errants when they have access to Ignite.
My opponent did consider some Force Hammer plays this turn, but eventually decided against it. I could have spent the focus to put up solid ground on one of my previous turns, or at least placed Orin in a more relevant position.
Score 0-1
Turn 3A
Gorten feats everything backwards. But with most of my jacks more or less out of operation I am quite low on actual working attacks and between annoying self sacrifices and tough rolls I end up dealing a lot less damage than anticipated on the Errants (meaning I only killed two). Though I do manage to remove a couple more Vengers.
Score 0-1
Turn 3B
My opponent is up by one point and starts his turn by declaring that he needs to clear the center zone and kill Anastasia to win. So he starts planning out a run where Kreoss goes all in to clear out Nemo. I am not paying proper attention and completely space on the fact that this will only score him three points, which leaves him one point short. We only realise at the end of my opponent’s turn when we tally up the scores.
Score 0-4
Turn 4A
At this point Kreoss is standing naked in front of my whole army so it is a trivial assassination.
Victory for the Mercenaries!
:: Evaluation ::
I like this iteration of the Gorten list. It is probably not going to make the cut in a serious tournament pair since it has a lot of weak spots and will struggle in many of the same matchups as the other top lists in Mercs at the moment (Issyria, Syvestro, Cyrenia/Harby, Zaal2).
