Turn 1A
It’s the last game of the day (and of the ConQuest Masters tournament) and I am paired against another Menoth player with a very similar Cyrenia FM list. After the long and hard won game last round I am not super happy to face the same army again, but dropping is not alternative since I have done quite well so far in the tournament.
This game my opponent wins the roll-off and opts to go first. Side selection is quite obvious considering his army and the giant rock just in front of the flag.

Turn 1B
I use Befuddle to fish the Champion out of cover and Righteous Fury range and shoot it down with the help of Curse of Veils.

Turn 2A
Cyrenia feats and makes a castle with the Avatar with Gaze up and a Rock wall in front. But he runs two of the initiate units up to jam, and the Menite Archon on my right is way out on the flank. I am not sure it is even in feat to begin with, but it is for sure not within 9” of Cyrenia taking Befuddle into account.

Turn 2B
I feat and Befuddle the Archon on the right out of Hand of Vengeance range of the Crusader and kill it with shooting. I then start removing any Initiates I can, but taking care to avoid the one that is within 5” of Avatar. I am not able to completely block off my flag because both the Morrowans and Gallant were caught in Gaze of Menoth. I didn’t realize this at first and my original plan was to put the blue Morrowan in front of the Thamarite. I should of course have put the Thamarite and Toro a bit further forward.
I score my flag and my opponent did not put any solo on his flag.

Turn 3A
With no Hand of Vengeance triggered my opponent is unable to make any meaningful headway through my feat. My memory fails me a bit on when I use Hermit minifeat, but I may have triggered it here to save the Thamarite archon who is alone in the left zone.
A vassal scores his flag and a monk walks up to contest my flag. Gaze is not up and the Choir sang Battle. My opponent struggles to find a good spot for the Rock Wall and decides to leave it.

Turn 3B
Blue archon and Toro kill the monk and the last Menite archon. I take the opportunity to remove the vassal behind the rock with the red thamarite. Gallant removes the Avatar with some help from Hermit’s Master of Ruin. Unfortunately I am not able to catch anything else with Hermit due to the book. Three Vigilants manage to take down the Crusader on the left with some help from Curse of Veils, Stir the Blood and the Charger shots.
The green Thamarite archon contests his flag and I score my own. Looking back at it I should have ran the Thamarite behind the rock instead of placing him in harm’s way just to get some shots off on his support staff.
Alexia holds on to the soul she got from one of the Initiates and runs over to protect Fiona who is camping 1 focus.

Turn 4A
The Initiates remove the contesting Thamarite with a CMA and Sanctifier kills the Yellow morrowan archon. The remaining monk contests my flag together with the Crusader who luckily fails to finish off the Blue Morrowan. Anastasia comes in on the right, but fails to kill the red Thamarite. It’s not likely that she succeeds, but a bit unnecessary by me to give her a back arc at least.

Turn 4B
I take out the Sanctifier, Monk and the book and start working on the Crusader who is still contesting my flag. I also kill Anastasia. A Vigilant runs up to contest his flag from behind the rock. No points are scored on either side.

Turn 5A
It turns out that the Vassal has Arcane Bolt which he manages to hit the contesting Vigilant needing 8’s. I didn’t consider this at all, so well played by my opponent for taking advantage of all his rules! Maybe I could have given myself cover with some better positioning.
I haven’t written much about what Cyrenia has been doing the last couple of turns, but she has just been allocating and casting Positive Charge while also camping a couple of focus. Luckily for me the Crusader is still unable to deal with the blue Morrowan archon.

I clear out the Crusader who was contesting both my flag and the right zone. Gallant and Vigilants continue to work on the Initiates and support dudes in the center, and I contest his flag.

Cyrenia casts dash and walks+repos over to the other side, presumably to bait the assassination. One initiate runs through by crew and contests the flag, while the other one contests the left zone. I think this was a pretty nice play by my opponent. However, he is running out of models and is not able to contest my right zone

I am running low on time, so the only thing I do is to activate Acosta and kill the Initiate who was contesting my flag. Gallant walks over to kill the Initiate in the right zone for the win, but my clock starts beeping so I just forfeit my combat action and clock over. I score two points.

ConQuest 2020 Masters wrap-up:
With a 4-1 record and fifth place I am obviously very happy with the result. I was only one SoS away from fourth place and did very well on both CP and VP compared to people around my final standing. There were only four qualifying spots for the Invitationals, but if any of the top four are on the winning team in the team tournament on Saturday I will be next in line. (Because I am a moron, I didn’t realize this fact at the time but the thought of not making the cut didn’t bother me either. I was just happy with the good result.)
That being said it felt miserable to have to face Cyrenia in three out of five games. I don’t enjoy playing against Faithful Masses in general and especially not with Fiona. I was quite lucky to squeeze out a win in two of the games (ironically the game I lost was vs. Exemplar Interdiction). And I was also lucky that the Syvestro player I faced didn’t know the matchup very well, because that’s one of the matchups I really want to avoid playing Fiona into. Not that Magnus2 would have done any better, but let’s be honest; I was going to one-list this tournament anyway.
