Turn 1A
I win first turn. From the get go I end up abandoning my flag, not realizing that I will have a huge problem to clear whatever he sends into the forest. The red Mariner should have been kept back to deal with this issue.
Turn 1B
Nemo keeps out of 13” from the Mangler. Otherwise stuff runs up max, trying to block the worst drag angles. Lucant feats and puts up Deceleration.
Turn 2A
I have an opportunity to Befuddle and drag in the Conservator. But it is a risky play since he is in cover at DEF 15 and with +6 ARM from feat and Decel the Conservator. This means that I will need a boosted 8 to hit the Befuddle. Assuming that I land the Curse of Veils and Kiss I will also need a boosted 8 to land the drag. I estimate it to a 50-50 chance, but I figure that it doesn’t cost me anything to give it a go since I am feating this turn anyway.
The play pays off and I kill the Conservator. I also manage to take out some support units with boosted AoEs.
I get overly cautious with blocking LoS and walk the red Mariner over as well, instead of keeping an eye on the right side flag as previously discussed.
Turn 2B
Inverter goes in and deals a bunch of damage to the Swabber. It loses Cortex and with the Savagery card played there will be no repairing. D3000 runs to my flag.
Score 0-2
Turn 3A
My Mangler clears the Inverter and the Mariner shoots the ADO off the flag. The blue Mariner kills the Reciprocators in my zone. I ambush in a n River Raider to contest the square zone. Ayana&Holt scores the central zone.
Score 2-2
Turn 3B
D3000 clears and scores my flag. Lucant runs over to his flag. The Monitor shoots Ayana, but is unable to Ricochet onto Holt due to Roth’s Mercy, noting that he should have targeted Holt instead. Had he done so I would have shield guarded the shot.
My opponent forgets to keep enough focus on Nemo to Locomotion the light vector into the central zone, which allows me score it with Ayana on his turn.
Score 3-6
Turn 4A
I charge the Mariner into the opposite zone and kill the light. I contest the flags and score two.
Score 5-6
Turn 4B
D3000 clear my flag again and the monitor kills the red Mariner. Lucant clears his flag. My opponent has ran out of models to contest my zone so I score one against my opponen’t three.
Score 6-9
Turn 5A
I charge in the Magnler to kill the Monitor, but forget that Nemo now has Electrify so I get pushed away after the charge attack. I scramble to find a way to Befuddle both the Monitor and Nemo out of the zones. I run the Swabber over to my flag to finally start dealing with D3000.
I started this turn with 9 minutes remaining, but when I clock over I have less than one minute left. Unfortunately with my clock running so low I am not prioritizing time to take pictures from this point on.
Score 8-9
Turn 5B
Lucant clears his flag again. The Monitor fails to kill my Mangler. I score my zone.
Score 9-11
Turn 6A
I take a super short turn running stuff in to contest and score my own zone.
Score 10-11
Turn 6B
Opponent kills the mangler to score his own zone and I score mine.
Score 11-12
Turn 6A
The last River Raider comes in to contest and I score my zone.
Score 12-12
Turn 7B
Lucant kiss the Mariner and River Raider to score his own flag and zone. I score my zone again, but it doesn’t help since my opponent is now ahead by one VP.
Score 13-14
Sadly, a loss for the Mercenaries
:: Evaluation ::
Obviously there were points to be scored for me over the last two turns if I had the time to actually play it out, so I would say I lost this game by time management even though I technically got to the end of turn 7. It really takes time to chew through a Lucant list, even at 75points and even with 50 min clock time. I didn’t spend a lot of time in the tank over the course of the game, but I could for sure have been quicker with execution. The main time sinks which required some planning and re-thinking were the Conservator kill, the Mariner charging into the zone and the misplay with the Electrify on the Monitor.
Play wise I should have been more proactive in finding a way to deal with D3000. Letting him score my flag twice and free kill two monkeys was just a gift to my opponent. At 13/17 and 8 boxes he is too tanky to kill with Soulfire, but I should have been able to find a way to Befuddle him out of the forest and shot him with a Mariner.
