179 Bart1 Irreg vs Krueger2 SM
21.05.2022
A friend tipped me about a Bart double colossal list so naturally I had to try it. The original list had a couple of (to me) odd solo choices and was missing the commodore cannon, so I modified it slightly to make it suit my playstyle better. Things I want to look out for are:
- Is Sylis worth it as he is there just to enable Broadsides+Batten?
- Is it enough to have Ayana&Holt as the only real unit?
- Do I need a Talon as a flexible scoring- and contesting piece?
- Can I play without Anastasia?

Opponent takes first turn. I am not super happy to give him the awesome wall when I have a Galleon, but the other side would have restricted my colossals to half the table so I don’t have a choice. It is actually so bad that maybe my opponent should have gone second just to dump that side on me?
Turn 1A
Turn 1B
I keep everything safe in a ball around Dez&Gubbin. I mess up a bit not placing Orin in B2B with both Colossals. This means that Krueger can feat and potentially get up a Hunter’s mark. I throw up Hot Shot on the Galleon, completely forgetting about Purgation on the Woldwyrds.
The cannon gets a place from the Galleon and slams the Woldwarden on the left over Chuck Dogwood, killing him.
Turn 2A
Krueger goes for the feat, but luckily I am far enough away that the Hunter’s mark play only gets the Death Archon into range. So he decides to abandon that line of play. The Wyrds to a decent chunk of damage to the Galleon despite quite a few sub-par dice rolls.
Turn 2B
I want to try the Broadsides “trick” and decide to upkeep Hot Shot despite it probably means that the Galleon is going to take a lot more damage next turn. My hope is that he will still survive if I can prevent anything from coming into melee using Bart’s feat. I manage to blast one warden off the table and deal a good chunk of damage to the one on the right.
This was a clear mistake. I should never have cast Hot shot the previous turn to begin with, but now that I had already taken the added damage I should have hot swapped it either to Bart himself or to the Blockader. Without an upkeep it is far from certain that the Galleon goes down.
The cannon slams the archon on the left out of threat range (actually almost off the table)
Score 1-1
Turn 3A
It turns out that I have messed up the angle for Gudrun on the right, so the archon is able to get line of sight with a TK. I did try to play around that, but had hoped that I could also stay in the squall. After measuring with a laser he was clearly in LOS so the lesson for me is to be a more thorough with proxying. I have also messed up Schythe’s placement because she is within AoE 3 blast range of the objective. This means that I have given away three solos for free. If my opponent can shoot out my objective he will also be able to score my flag (luckily he is not).
In the center the Galleon goes down and my opponent scores the zone and flag.
Score 4-1
Turn 3B
I am losing this game for sure and have to go for a desperate assassination. With both wardens dead and the Wyrds full on fury it is actually doable, though far from trivial. After a stumbling over a few activations I get some lucky rolls and get the win.
Victory for the Mercenaries!
:: Evaluation ::
Not really counting this as a victory since I was super down on scenario and attrition. My opponent could easily have prevented the assassination had he just used the Blacklad to remove some fury from a Wyrd instead of running to the flag.
Upkeeping Hot shot and casting Broadsides was definitely a mistake this game since my opponent was able to two-round my Galleon much thanks to the Woldwyrds getting Purgation. But I did get to see the full potential of Broadsides in this list and to be honest it didn’t impress me much. I could have gotten the same mileage out of the focus if I had allocated some to the Blockader. This means that Sylis is going to get kicked out from the next iteration of the list.
The next question on my list was if I could live with Ayana&Holt as the only unit. It didn’t come up this game, but I saw that it will be really easy to keep Holt safe behind the colossals even after I commit Ayana and at that point he will be a one-man scoring machine.
I did miss some cheap and flexible elements in my list to send forward to contest or jam up my opponent. A Talon and Anastasia both fill this purpose, so I will try to incorporate those in the next iteration.
