170 Fiona1 Irreg vs Goreshade4 SoR

30.04.2022, RheinCon 2022, Team Tournament, Round 3

Well, this tournament hasn’t exactly gone to plan so far, but maybe if we can squeeze out a win we can at least avoid the wooden spoon. This was our opponent’s team:

Ret: Goreshade4, Vyros2

Grymkin: Child, Old Witch3

Mercenaries: Crosse2, Ashlynn1

I feel that I have OK matchups all around and end up with Retribution. My original plan is to play Ossrum into Retribution, but I get a bit worried after seeing Vyros2 in the pair. On the other hand the Goreshade4 list is not your standard Defenders list, but in Shadows. I figure this is a 50-50 list chicken and drop Fiona. My opponent drops Goreshade4.

Fiona1, Irregulars

  • Mariner
  • Mangler

Nemo4

  • Freebooter

Gaspy4

  • Shrike

Anastasia

Kell

Commodore cannon

Kayazy Eliminators

Hermit

Hutchuk

vs

Goreshade4

  • 2x Phoenix

2x MHSF + UA

2x Void

Hermit

Spears

Deployment

I get first turn and take it to prevent MHSF taking too much table space. Opponent takes the side with the forest.

Turn 1A

Turn 1B

Turn 2A

I have an opportunity to mostly wipe the left hand unit of MHSF and decide to go in. It costs me the Freebooter, and unfortunately I need to send up Boomhowler himself to get the ranges I need. Gaspy clouds up and I put a Boomhower in the right zone.

Turn 2B

Opponent clears the left zone. I try a bit too hard to keep the right hand Boomhower alive, but he dies in the end. I have kept one dude alive on the left for the reinforcements from Nemo. A better play would have been to just accept the loss of Boomhower himself and the right zone and keep the remainder of the unit alive. Gorehsade feats.

Score 0-2

Turn 3A

Fiona feats. I try to clear the left zone, but unfortunately leave Narn alive. I send in Gaspy to kill the Void, objective, and spears, but completely forget about Gaspy’s feat so he gets stationaried after killing the void.

Score 0-2

Turn 3B

Opponent clears the right zone with shooting and with Gaspy stationaried he still goes down quite easily through feat and four camp.

Score 0-3

Turn 4A

With my blunder giving away Gaspy and not managing to take control over the left zone I feel that my best chance this game is to go for an assassination. The odds are probably quite OK because I get quite a lot of attacks with Nemo, the Mariner shot, some spells and a charging Gudrun. But unfortunately I end up leaving Goreshade on one box.

Score 0-3

Turn 4B

Fiona had to expose herself in the assassination run and gets smacked to the ground.

Sadly, a loss for the Mercenaries

:: Evaluation ::

I was not happy with my playing this game and didn’t have a clear plan on how to win from the beginning. This led me to just play reactive and commit to unfavorable trades. I also felt absent minded during the game and ended up first forgetting that it was Goreshade’s feat turn and later forgetting Hermit.

:: Summary of the Tournament ::

With a 0-3 record we would give ourselves a crystal clear F grade and decided that our team name should be changed to ‘The Nordic Walkovers’. My personal record was exceptionally bad losing all of my three games, but on the bright side I actually came really close to winning all of them. The first game was already in the bag until I made a critical error which got Fiona killed. The two last game I was significantly down, but could very easily have stolen the wins on clock and assassination respectively.

Our Ret player’s last round opponent actually commented during the game that he could not believe how we had lost two rounds with such good lists and my teammate’s good playing. Mind you he was playing Issyria into Crosse2 with double colossal and it was a complete beating up until that point. I had to comment that our team had one good player with trash teammates. Then he unnecessarily managed to put Issyria within range of Crosse and got her assassinated. That pretty much sums up our team’s performance this tournament. But I have to admit that I enjoyed seeing Mercs take the win and it really didn’t matter that we got another round loss at that point. What did matter was that I had some fun games and all three opponents were great guys and strong players!
